I see the Rainbow connection...The Purple connection though is quite vague...

I don't want to be negative, but I don't expect this to be anything worthwhile at all.

You know, I knew that, but old age has kept me from remembering it...and I had that album at one time as well...LOL!

Just more old timers milking back catalogues they had little or nothing to do with. Cynical money making is very boring.

I'm surprised Yngwie Malmsteen isn't involved. He wants to be Ritchie Blackmore.

From JLT's website: Purple Rainbow features a line-up of musicians who were part of several of the most influential bands in hard/classic rock: From Deep Purple and Rainbow to Black Sabbath and Dio.
Tony Carey explains, "Now, the members of Purple Rainbow have fulfilled a personal and professional dream and stepped into the spotlight to present the music that is our passion. Driven by our love of performing and their desire to revive the golden years of hard rock, we're staging a return to authentic music that comes from the heart and soul."
The list of memorable songs from their collective Discographies is never-ending and includes: "Man on the Silver Mountain," "Stone Cold," "Stargazer," "Long Live Rock 'n' Roll," "Street of Dreams," "Smoke on the Water," "Highway Star," "Burn" and many more.
The band is currently looking to book concerts in 2009.I'm interested to see what they come up with. I'm glad to see JLT is keeping busy, he's also been involved in his band Big Noize profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=292863572. Some may call it milking their back catalog but I don't see it as a bad thing. I'd love to see them perform since I haven't been able to in the past, besides, maybe they'll introduce some of the younger generation to some classic rock?

I stand by my initial assessment. I this wasn't anything other than a money making exercise then they'd be playing original material and would be called something other than an amalgam of 2 very well known other bands. Cynical in the extreme.....

Well one could say that Heaven & Hell did a similar money making grab. They initially got back together to perform hits from 25+ years ago. Sure, money was the prime motivator. But if they and the fans enjoyed it, why not? Being at the Radio City show I could tell you that it was enjoyed by all, and if they made tons of money doing it, that's fine with me. They kicked ass. I for one would have been thankful if all I got was that show. I never got to see either Dio solo or Black Sabbath...so for me it was a dream come true. Maybe they (Heaven & Hell) did the initial tour to see what the interest was before they decided to embark on a new album...I'd hope that Purple Rainbow would go in the same direction providing that they still "got it".

No, I don't consider the Heaven And Hell issue to be the same thing. They were all in the same band, at the same time and they were only playing the songs they actually wrote and performed together as a band.

Unlike the guys from Sabbath, JLT had nothing to do with Smoke on the Water or almost any of the songs mentioned (except Stone Cold and Street of Dreams which was way past the great days of Rainbow IMO). I think it's a bit pretentious to attach yourself to songs that your contributions were either non-existent or rather small. No Glover, no Gillan, no Balckmore = Using the name Purple Rainbow to deperately drum up interest in a new project. Just my opinion.

I believe that JLT with Purple Rainbow should only be playing the songs he actually sung or wrote with either band. I can't see them playing Smoke on the Water...that would obviously be cashing in on something he didn't have anything to do with. That I'd have a problem with.

True...I read your earlier post to mean that your main issue was with the oldtimers/money making.

No, the issue is with them making money from someone else's songs....and them having the audacity to claim that they 'invented' the musical genre.

Where did they claim to invent the genre? I must have missed that.

PURPLE RAINBOW UPDATE FROM TONY CAREY: I have had an update from Tony Carey regarding the recently announced Purple Rainbow project. A couple of things need to be updated after a little fan confusion following the initial press release. Tony states: "1) Glenn Hughes will NOT be part of this project, as implied by the setlist, he's doing great with his solo stuff and we wish him all the further success in the world; so 'Burn', 'Highway Star' etc. won't be in our setlist. 'stone cold', 'street of dreams', and other original JLT songs will be. 2) Yngwie Malmsteen - God bless him - isn't part of this project either. I'll be seeing him at the Rockperry Festival in Finland July 19 where we're both playing - me with Planet P Project - and I'll give him all your best. I apologise to anyone I misled, it wasn't intentional." Stay tuned....shows are currently being booked for the band and Tony closes by saying: 'See you out there!'
