(Contact Music) QUEEN guitarist BRIAN MAY insists he had no idea bandmate FREDDIE MERCURY was gay, assuming the parading frontman was just flamboyant.
May met the late star in 1970 but claims it was not until the 1980s that he realised the frontman's sexuality - because Mercury began to bring men with "that particular Adonis look" backstage. He recalls, "When I shared a room with him on tour in the early days I can assure you it was girls who generally stayed overnight.
"But he seemed to be what these days you would call metrosexual. He was into his hair, his clothes - he definitely led the way with regard to preening."

It didn't dawn on me until the album cover of 'The Game' before that it never crossed my mind even though some of those 70's costumes were pretty obvious.

I started having questions when I read that his favorite singer was Liza Minnelli.

I always thought it was funny that American's did not know Rob Halford was gay. Most metal fans in the UK knew for years before he 'came out' & didn't care. I was talking with one homophobic arsehole whilst lining up outside The Fillmore in San Francisco for a Queensryche gig who won't listen to Priest anymore because of Rob's sexual preferences.
The thing is, the band he was lining up to see, so I have been told , has a singer who swings both ways. Geoff Tate is supposedly bisexual!

I always thought it was funny that American's did not know Rob Halford was gay. You have to remember that we saw very little LIVE Priest until they hit with British Steel. Up until then Americans only saw them in photos. I was a fan from Sad Wings but Priest had no presence here in the US. I went to a British Steel show and the minute Rob hit the stage I KNEW. There was NO DOUBT. The funny thing is when Rob was in the closet he acted very GAY onstage......now that evryone knows he's gay he acts differently. weird.

But when i saw Judas Priest doing a tour after "Sin After Sin" was released- Rob was DEFINATELY in that small Closet (with a few skeletons :-[i bet )i have to stress it didn't make a difference to me he is great singer and that particular tour Priest were awesome

It doesn't really matter now does it? The man and his music is legendary. The vision and scope of his talent is one that will live on forever. This was a front man for a group that would arguably bring any crowd to it's knees and proved it time and time again, not only through recorded efforts but live performances as well, over the years. I recall reading a Circus magazine profile on the group back around 1975 and it didn't take more than a glance at the pic of Freddie at the keyboard to indicate the guy was marching to a different beat so to speak. I have to admit...the pic smacked of "flamer"!!! Did it bother me then? NO! Does it bother me now? NO! Queen's music spoke volumes and still does to this day regardless of Fred's private life and preferences. Brian May, along with the other band members were fortunate and blessed to be part of a group that helped mold and change the face of music in the manner in which they did, all because of Mr. Mercury's creative insight, incredible talent, and love of music. Anyone that has had the chance to listen to the debut album can clearly see that Freddie came out hitting the ground running and quite honestly, never looked back. There is not one album in my collection that compares to, or contains the same complex, diverse, and raw energy that this album has. Queen's debut was a huge and yet totally underrated album then, and now. To dismiss him or any other talented musician because of their personal traits when it comes to sexual preferences, is kind of like denying a part of ourselves for some of our own personal beliefs and tendencies simply by adopting the music that we tend to listen to. Fred lived his life the way in which he wanted to...trying not to hurt anyone else in the process. His music said it all up until the day that he died and left the rest of us wanting more from him. The one thing about Freddie, was that he was at least able to make fun of himself and proof of this can be witnessed in some of the videos and also, more importantly his music. If you listen to and even watch "I Want To Break Free", for example, the man pretty much says it all about who he was and that he was more than okay with it...yet at the same time, had no alterior motive to push his preferences on to his collective fans. Call it "Camp", call it over the "edge", whatever...the man did what he felt was right in his heart artistically and never needed to look back or apologize for it. I have to give the guy a few extra points for not "really" trying to cover it up over the years unlike someone such as ohhhh let's say "Rock Hudson"! Nothing against the guy...but who was he trying to fool and how many did he take with him for being so discreet? Let's face it...at least Freddie Mercury never hid in the closet. Kudos to Freddie...kudos to Rob Halford and kudos to Elton John...just to mention a few...for they have given us some great music and I for one applaud them and respect them for being who they are as not only great musicians but great and honest people as well living their lives the way in which they want to. Thanks Kim

Great points Kim! I could care less of preferences as they're not going to affect mine. I just care about the musc As I stated earlier that it never crossed my mind until they released 'the Game'...& what did I do then? ...I cranked out "Dragon Attack"
