On February 9, 1964 The Beatles set American television viewing records with their appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. The Ed Sullivan Show was known for giving cutting-edge musical performers a venue to play, and launching more than one career. Several years earlier, Sullivan allowed a then-controversial Elvis to perform on his show. The Beatles appearance came just as their popularity was reaching the United States. They appeared on the show on three consecutive weeks, and over 70 million people tuned in for each performance. Their appearances marked the beginning of a wide commercialization of the band, which was followed with concerts, memorabilia, and movies. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubkwVWH-Ia0
