Haven't done a Top 10 in awhile. I've had this one on my mind for a while now (and you may be able to guess why). I don't think this is definitive by any means, just what I could think of after a few minutes thought. I'm sure somebody will come up with several that make me go, "duh! I forgot about that one!". Anyhow, here's what I came up with:
10-Lucky Man by Emerson, Lake And Palmer. Outtro. Annoyingly nails-on-chalkboard to my ears, but it's pretty damn memorable. I felt like I had to slip it in at #10.
9-Suite Madame Blue by Styx. Middle solos. Nothing fancy, but certainly makes the song in a calm-before-the storm kinda way.
8-Welcome To The Future by Brad Paisley. Outtro. Weird that a Country artist has some serious synth lines in a song, but there's some seriously good things going on at the end of this one and that's why this song is #8........NOT because of the dopey synth intro.
7-Tom Sawyer by Rush. End solos. Not a big Rush fan at all, but this synth lines works well for one of the few Rush songs I enjoy listening to.
6-Magic Man by Heart. End solos. I saw Heart in 1998 and Howard Leese actually did all these solos on guitar with a tremolo bar and it was WAY cooler. BUT, the original synth solos were very awesome to begin with.
5-Touch And Go by Emerson, Lake And Powell. Main riff. Simple, repetitive, but memorable and great.
4-Only Time Will Tell by Asia. Intro. Very majestic. I love it!
3-Never Been Any Reason by Head East. Solos. Killer stuff. Story I heard was that they weren't totally happy with the first take of the synth line, so they did another one without erasing the original. When they went for mixdown, they forgot to pull the fader down for the original synth track and wound up with 2 synths going at once......and liked what they heard and wound up using both in the final mix.
2-Separate Ways by Journey. Intro/main riff. Outstanding stiletto synth lines, instantly recognizable.
1-The Final Countdown by Europe. Yup, that commercial spot made me think of doing this top 10, but this is easily the best, most memorable synth line of all time.......and probably the only time Europe will ever top a Top 10 list.
