It's become a cliche to say the the original lineup of any given band was the best. In many cases that is true, but to apply that logic to ALL bands is just lazy thinking IMO. Was the first Rush album with John Rutsay on drums really so good that it negates everything they've done since with Neil Peart? I think not. And even though there are some out there who will go to their graves saying that the original Fleetwood Mac or Journey lineups were best, no one can deny that those bands didn't become household names until they replaced some names from the original lineup. So, put your thinking caps on. What were the 10 best band lineups that were not original?

Me personally, I like the Bruce Dickinson fronted Iron Maiden better than the Paul Di'Anno version. And REO Speedwagon was much better with Kevin Cronin on vox than Terry Luttrell, also I think Styx got a lot better once Tommy Shaw joined the band. There's 3 all just my opinion.

My list:
10-Rush with Neil Peart. Gotta list Rush, but it's almost too easy. John Rutsey was only on the first album and they've done so much since then with Neil Peart. Probably should be highter, but I don't really care for Rush no matter who played drums for them.
9-Lynyrd Skynyrd with Rickey Medlock and Hughie Thomasson. From 1996 til 2004 Skynyrd was basically an allstar band with Blackfoot's Medlock and The Outlaws' Thomasson. The live shows during this period were phenominal. At least as good as what we heard on the classic lineup's "One More From The Road", but this lineup gave us great versions of songs from "Street Survivors" and "First And Last" too. While die-hard Skynyrd fans will contend that this lineup didn't produce the classic albums like the 70's lineups did, in the 1990's and 2000's you are comparing 15 song CDs to 8-10 song vinyl records. Take the best 8-10 songs from 1997's "Twenty" or 1999's "Edge Of Forever" or 2003's "Vicious Cycle" and you have 3 albums that are AT LEAST as good as any of their 70's output. Sure they didn't produce the hits like they did in the 70's, but that is why this better-than-original line up is only #9 on my list.
8-Yes 90125. I'm going with this lineup as better than the original. Maybe just cuz I'm a sucker for Pop sheen over meaningless chops. But, hey, if you prefer the lineup of Steve Howe and Rick Wakeman, realize that that version of Yes was not original either!
7-Styx Crystal Ball through Mr Roboto. I like what Lawrence Gowan brings to the band with his keyboard chops and live energy, but I miss the Dennis DeYoung material in both the live shows and on record. I'll gladly sit through "Babe" if it means I also get to hear "Suite Madame Blue" and "Queen Of Spades". Remember, this "Classic" lineup was not original, as Tommy Shaw replaced original guitarist John Cur-something-ski.
6-Journey tie. Like Rush, the original Journey only recorded one album, so it's not hard to choose a non-original lineup as being better. But which one? Can't deny that the addition of Steve Perry truely put them on the map. Jonathan Cain wrote or co-wrote most of their biggest hits and the lineup with Steve Augeri and Deen Castronova was one of the best live shows I had ever seen. Which one was better than the original? All of them. Which ws best? I dunno, flip a coin.

5-The Eagles Hotel California lineup. The original quartet was pretty damn good, especially for a guy like me who loves Countrifried Rock. However, their popularity kept rising with each roster change. For me, they hit their stride once Joe Walsh joined the group, though one can't discount the contributions of Timothy Schmitt and Don Felder either.
4-Iron Maiden Piece Of Mind thru Seventh Son. Yeah, yeah, the latest, three guitar incarnation is pretty damn amazing in concert, but I'll take the commercial success of their 80's albums over anything they've released with the current lineup. I know some of you will beg to differ.

3-Megadeth w/ Marty. The first 3 Megadeth Albums were all pretty good, but inconsistant. They had some great songs and they had several not-so-great songs. Also, the lineups changed with each album. In 1990, guitarist Marty Friedman and drummer Nick Menza joined the group and Megadeth hit their stride with "Rust In Peace", "Countdown To Extinction", "Youthanasia", "Cryptic Writings" and "Risk". Not only were these great, consistent albums, but they were multi-platinum, chart-topping success. Sure, "Risk" went a little too far Pop for the average Megadeth fan, but those were good songs nonetheless. Later incarnations brought back the Metal, but I just don't think they were as good, even though Dave Mustaine might kick my ass for saying so.
2-Deep Purple tie. Fuck me, I thought the best version of Deep Purple was the Coverdale/Hughes lineup. "Burn", Stormbringer" and "Come Taste The Band" are my 3 favorite Purple albums. However, the Mk II lineup is damn close behind IMO and I can't deny the commercial success of the Blackmore, Gillan, Glover, Lord, Paice lineup. I can't decide which was better, but I think we all can agree that both were better than the original.

...and #1 is:
Fleetwood Mac w/ Buckingham Nicks. No matter how much one may enjoy the early, bluesier Fleetwood Mac, you can't deny the multimillion selling success of the Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks version of Fleetwood Mac. And you know what? I'll say it: They WERE better than the original Fleetwood Mac. They wrote better songs, were tighter, had more staying power, shit, most people younger than I am think this WAS the original lineup!

Good list. BTW, Styx DOES play Queen of Spades and Suite Madame Blue in concert still. Obviously not every one, but I have heard them over the last few times I've seen them.
I think one that's been overlooked would be Pink Floyd with Gilmoure over Barrett.

Motley Crue with John Corabi on vocals
And Jesse that's the only Yes album I like. And the one after. Pop? Yes but good pop.

I think one that's been overlooked would be Pink Floyd with Gilmoure over Barrett. Good catch! That's almost too easy, like Rush w/ Peart, but it still deserves a mention. Sorry I forgot about it. See that's why we need you here!

Still fartin' around with Linux here...so that's why I look like I'm from South Park...Doh! By the time I'm finished, I'll be a puter programmer...not as easy as I thought it would be...back to code and stuff. Maybe I'll just buy a new system with Win8 and go from there as some of my stuff doesn't work with the new OS?
Glad to hear that Quo made the top 20 there Jesse...haha.
Take care guys...still fukin' around with this thing...bear with me.
Thanks as well Frank for the greetings!!!
