What the heck, as Jesse has mentioned, the board has been slow for some time and I thought, what the hell...let's extend Jesse's original question to other groups from back in the day.
Although familiar with some of the music, I'm not much of an authority on these guys, and compared to what I know of, read about, and listen to regarding The Beatles, The Beach Boys are somewhat of an enigma to me when it comes to their history and overall musical accumen...so I figured I'd try and keep the flow going as they say, with the mention of another great iconic group that also, in my opinion changed the musical scene back in the 60's.
Were these guys a "Boy Band"? Any thoughts?
Thanks Kim

No. Sure they appealed to the girls but when I think of the Beach Boys I don't think of sappy love songs directed at girls (although we do know they definitely wrote a few of them). I think of partying on the beach with girls, surfing, racing, eating burgers, & hopefully not running into Eric Von Zipper & his gang. They were definitely a party band & if anyone ever seen them live guys & girls are dancing throughout their shows. Brian Wilson is an amazing songwriter & I really feel "God Only Knows" is one of the greatest songs ever written

I'd be more inclined to say the Beach Boys were a "Boy Band" than the Beatles, but I don't know that they really fit the bill either. I dunno, I am relatively young here; was the term "Boy Band" even used before the mid-1980's? To me, the whole thing with the Beatles and even the Monkees being labeled as "Boy Bands" seems odd, because the label wasn't used (or at least I don't think it was) during those bands' heyday. I felt the same way in the 1990's when folks were calling Neil Young's music "Grunge".

I agree with Jesse that maybe they could be labeled a boy band. But once again I dont feel they are.

No, and for all the reasons spacelord pointed out the Beatles were not a boys band.
