Thought I'd make mention of the fact that REM has
decided to throw in the towell after many years
as a group.
I do realize that this group was not one to be reckoned
with here on our great forum and although I have made
mention of them in the past, was not a group that warranted
a lot of feedback. Granted, they are regarded as a somewhat
"alternative" group in terms of the music that they were
known for over the years...even some of the early music
was suspect as fodder for those that leaned just a wee bit
left of the central part of the musical bubble so to speak.
However, they did make a pretty hefty name for themselves,
especially in the later part of the 80's.
I recall my first introduction to the group one late night while
watching Letterman back in 84'? or so. I was quite surprised to
witness a rather young and yet energetic Peter Buck boppin around the stage, all through Stipe's solidified and statuesque
mannerisms at the microphone.
The music hit a chord with me back then and I remember thinking to myself...I must remember this group. Well, as the next few years came along, they didn't fail to deliver and with the release of "Document", it solidified my appreciation for their brand of music.
This release was a pretty big deal for the group at the time and brought them into the lime light, spawning a couple of memorable tracks...but what surprises me is the underrated aspect of some of the other cuts from the release.
They of course went on to prove themselves with the likes of
Out Of Time and Automatic For the People, again, providing
some decent tracks for their legion of fans.
I've always regarded these guys as not only an alternative group so to speak, but one that had that "grunge" edge to the music that they became known for...and if it hasn't been said, I'll gladly admit, at least to me...it was "grunge" music that you could sing along to.
Pretty talented, and in some ways, underrated, again in my
humble opinion and for a group that spanned 3 decades, faired out quite well especially when you consider that one, Kurt Cobain claimed that he was inspired by the likes of Stipe and Co.
Standout tracks...too many to mention...however, regardless of what the take is from many a casual fan may be...here's a few
of my takes...
7 Chinese Bros.
Pretty Persuasion
(Don't go back to) Rockville
Trouble at The Heron House
Exhuming McCarthy
Belong
Me In Honey
The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight
Monty Got a Raw Deal
...just a few of the somewhat more obscure ones that a lot
of folks may not be familiar with.
I'll miss these guys...but it was a good run for them and
my hat goes off to the REM crew.
Thanks
Kim
