Why do they put no thought into the Superbowl halftime show? Every band and artist that is on there, their setlists have been so predictable! There is no creativity at all. The Rolling Stones for example started their set with Start Me Up, and then ended the set with Satisfaction. WTF! We all know the Stones have much better songs than the ones they played during the Superbowl!
Then of course you have the people that are paid or chosen to go up next to the stage and act like they are into the music, no matter who the artist is you always have this. They really should do away with the Superbowl halftime performances in my honest opinion.

I don't find anything wrong the setlists by the classic bands. For that kind of crowd they have to play the hits. They have to play what the crowd wants to hear which would be the hits. This isn't your normal concert going crowd. These people are here for football & the half time is just an added attraction. Most of the fans at a football game only know the hits. My 63 year old sister went crazy over the Stones & the Who.Personally, I don't mind the half time show but I'd be happy with Marching Bands Same with Hockey Games, Sure it's great to hear Kiss, Ozzy, & AC?DC but if I'm at a hockey game I'd rather hear an organ

Why do they have to play the hits? You are telling me that the fans at the Superbowl don't know more than 3 songs by each band that is playing? That is pathetic!

You play the songs that the majority of the audience will know and enjoy. They only have about 15 minutes for the halftime show (is it even THAT long?) and can only play about 4 songs. The Rolling Stones and the Who could probably pull the names of 4 of their songs out of a hat and put on a good show, but there would still be alot of people pissed off that they didn't play "Satisfaction" or "Won't Get Fooled Again".

They are playing to the masses and of course they're gonna play their biggest singles.

It's a FOOTBALL game. That's why. If it was a rock concert, then it'd be a different story. It's all hype and the promoters are smart enough to capitalize on what's going to sell. The organizers ensure that the so called "hits" are played for the recognizability factor and oness that keep the "average patron" in tune with the overall event. Having the Rollng Stones perform an obscure track will certainly make some, that are not fans of the group, go, "what the fuck is that"? Playing "Satisfaction" pleases them all. A good majority of Superbowl patrons are most likely in the 34 to 50 age group, ergo, the decision to go with old over new, at this point makes a bit more sense...for now. Although I'm not a football fan to any degree, I can honestly say that I'd doubt if the younger crowds would help matters much in regards to promoting the event. They did that with that Jackson gal showing her tit with another young fella...and although it's most likely still the biggest hit on YouTube, the fact remains that in order to promote the Superbowl, the powers that be would prefer to play it safe at this point. When you consider, Football is one of America's greatest sports, who in the rock world wouldn't want to be a part of it? This is an event that arguably gets the most television exposure for the entire year. The networks know it, the record execs know it. The demographics also show, that at this stage of the game, a vast majority of the viewership is straddling the "baby-boomer" line...(sorry, we're getting healthier and still here...). So, with acts like the Stones and other veteran acts, the focus is on the "familiar" and tried and true. In 10 years from now, if the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Pearl Jam are still available, then, granted, they'll be the choice of half-time performers. It's all relative. By that time, the Stones will be into their 70's and will be a difficult draw, even for the "armchair" quarterbacks watching the game in 2021 and most likely not be the candidate of choice for the half-time entertainment ensemble. However, don't rule out Springsteen...hahaha. Anyway...probably wrong on all counts...by all means, let the hammering begin...I'm gonna go listen to some Stones music, now that you mentioned their name.... Just an opinion from a simple man...a very simple man. Thanks Kim

The Stones had other hits that were better than Satisfaction, and Start Me up. They are just as familiar also. They have stronger songs than those two I have listed. They also have been played on the radio time and time again, almost just as much as the ones they played at the Superbowl.
By the way did you see how corny the Goo Goo Dolls performance was yesterday? The hawaiian dancers and kids going along to their music? Give me a break! You are telling me they couldn't have came up with something better? They should have just had the band play and leave the extras out of it. They ruined that performance in my honest opinion.

Bluecheer, You need to stay away from all media. Just sit in your little world, with your own CDs. You'll have lower blood pressure. Throw away your TV, burn your magazines, don't pick up a newpaper, stay off Billboard.com, and keep your radio turned off in your car. Just stick your Vincebus Eruption CD (from 42 years ago) in your car's CD player and relax.

I guess a new rule in my life will be to never watch a half time performance again or go to a live concert where the set lists and show is so predictable and corny.

I had this rule for a while, then I missed Janet Jackson's tit a few years ago and I haven't missed a second of a half-time show since!

Corny? Perhaps. Unplanned? OMG Major-General short-sightedness to the max here, in this question. Holy crap. You couldn't possibly be lucid and ask why there's no planning when it comes to the Super Bowl halftime show?!?!? There's more planning than you could even possibly imagine. Time lines, contracts, negotiations, engineering, aquisitions, research, security, wheeling and dealing... probably only about a MILLION elements to bring together in perfect synchronicity to create a show from scratch each and every year.
Americans love to be entertained and our Super Bowl is a showcase event at the national level. Believe me, you've insulted hundreds if not thousands of folks that are intimately involved with the show.
Wow. They'd bitch slap you soooo hard your mother would feel it.

Come to think of it......?......
We here in Canuckville never did see that "boob"...and if I'm not mistaken they went to a Kraft Dinner Macaroni commercial...and I still have a closet full of the damn stuff...DOH!
Strange thing is...every time I fire up a serving of Kraft Dinner, I think of boobs?............... I sure do love Kraft Dinner.
I guess advertising does have an impact...subliminal or not? ;D
Thanks Kim

Man did yesterdays Superbowl halftime performance blow. They get worse and worse every fuckin year. Last night took the cake though! They were lip synching and even seemed to forget the words to their own songs lol

Fuck me, I thought it was pretty good! Don't get me wrong, I'm no Black-Eyed Peas fan, nor did that performance make me want to buy a BEP CD or download a song or two by them. But was it entertaining? I say yeah. There's a big part of me that just doesn't "Get" that type of music and that type of show, but looking at it for what it was, it was good. I really don't think they were lip-synching. First off, the vocal mix was off for most of the performance. Whoever was mixing the sound should be shot as he/she didn't seem to know who was singing lead at any given point. Secondly, if the vocals WERE prerecorded, I would think they would've gone for another take of "Sweet Child O' Mine" in which that chick was flat for the entire song.
Maybe I just had ridiculously low expectations, but I thought it was good for what it was.

I'm no Blackeyed Peas fan & to tell you the truth I wasn't paying to close of attention to it because I had such Low expectations of the show but every so often me & the wife would say "This is really not bad at all!". I didn't mind it but then I went on facebook only to find EVERYONE tear them apart!! ...& I mean everyone (even my teenage nieces & nephews & a couple of my friends Teenage Kids!) so I figured maybe it was me & maybe I should've payed closer attention. I was also riding high because I had just one 150 bucks on a football pool for the half time score so I figured anyone would've sounded great at that point but Jesse I seen it just the way you did so I guess it wasn't in my mind!

I thought it was embarrassingly horrible. The singing was below standard. The music was about as twinkly as you could get it. The choreography was infantile. That show sucked balls. The best part was Slash. All of a sudden he appeared, then all of a sudden he was gone and it was back to the crappy pablem for the masses.
