Kim Mitchell Lewiston,NY 8/13/08

I’ve been a fan of Kim Mitchell since I discovered his original band Max Webster in the late 70’s & have seen him countless times since then. Kim is always entertaining live & didn’t disappoint his fans on Wednesday August 13th as he and his band put on a spectacular 2 hour performance at Artpark in Lewiston, NY. Mitchell opened the show with his anthem from his ‘Shakin’ Like a Human Being’ 1986 album “That’s the Hold” which led into “Rocklandwonderland”. In 2007 Kim Mitchell released, in my opinion, his best solo album ever ‘Ain’t Life Amazing’ & the next song he played on this night was the title track from that album which rocked the outdoor venue. His next tune was “In My Shoes” then, not coming up for any air he led the crowd of thousands into “I am a Wild Party” which had the crowd singing along. Now that the crowd was really pumped it was time to bring back “Million Vacations” from the Max Webster days of 1979. “Dream Thieves” from his new album was followed by “Easy to Tame” which brought the tempo down a bit only to get the crowd dancing & rocking out to the funkified “Lemon Wedge” from his ‘Itch’ album. The band kept the momentum & energy up by launching into Max Webster’s “Paradise Skies”. As the sun began to set for the evening Mitchell mellowed out with a beautiful version of “Pure as Gold” from the ‘Aural Fixation’ album. Mitchell, long time bassist & backing vocalist Peter Fredette, dummer Chris Sutherland, & keyboardist Don Breithaupt created a buzz buzz buzz rocking out to “Rock & Roll Duty” followed by probably the most popular Max Webster tune “Battlescar”. “Patio Lanterns” & “All We Are” closed the set before the band launched into their encores of “Go For a Soda” & “Lager & Ale”. For some reason one of my favourite parts of a Kim Mitchell show is when he adds the guitar solo from Max Webster’s “Beyond the Moon” to another song at the end of the show & this time it was at the end of “Lager & Ale”.
Overall the show was great & Mitchell had a hilarious moment when he said he was going to play an old song from Canadian radio & launched into the intro of Rush’s “Closer to the Heart” followed by the beginning power chords of “Fly by Night”.
