Ok, I'm a huge movie fan, & Horror is my favorite genre. I have between 300-400 Horror films.
So whats your blood thirsty 30?
Here is mine:
1. Hellraiser - Treachery in the family. Frank & Julia are the real monsters here.
2. The Exorcist - Fear of losing one's child. To the devil no less. Linda Blair's performance is the definition of horror!
3. American Werewolf in London - The perfect Werewolf movie. The perfect horror/comedy.
4. The Thing (John Carpenter) - The definition of dread & suspense, isolated in the Antarctic.. Who is the Thing? Killer monster effects!
5. Brotherhood of the Wolf - Is it a horror movie? Is it a Kung fu movie? Is it a Political thriller? Is it a time set costume piece? It's all these things, & a damn fine movie to. Based on a true story, but heavily fictionalized.
6. Evil Dead - A roller coaster of a ride! Sam Rami turned the possesed movie sub-genre on its ear with this. Probably the goriest movie up to its time. Owes debt to Night of the Living Dead.
7. Curse of the Demon (Night of the Demon, British title) - Dread, dread, & more dread, from this 50's British film, which I consider the best horror film of that decade. The ending will get you!
8. Bram Stokers Dracula - Francis Ford Coppola made the ultimate Dracula version with this film. Beautifully photographed & directed. Gary Oldman's Dracula should of got an Oscar. A love story in all its horror.
9. Fright Night - Another masterpiece of horror/comedy. Chris Sarrandon makes a most menacing & sexy Vampire with a sense of humor, & I'm not gay!
10. Creature From the Black Lagoon - Classic! Filled with a sense of dread. The swimming scene with the woman & the Creature swimming below her in the Black lagoon raises the hair on the back of my neck! Especially when he lightly drags his claws on her. The first "Jaws" moment in the water.
11. The Birds - MORE DREAD! Who would of thought birds would make such a potent horror vehicle! Alfred did! The school scene is among one of the greatest in moviedom!
12. The Decent - Attention! A new horror director has arrived! Neil Marshall's film about women lost in a cave with subterranian humanoid creatures stalking them, while the long time friends trust of one another falls apart, makes for the best horror movie in years! A real character study in horror & deceit!
13. The Howling - This would be my favorite Werewolf film if not for An American Werewolf in London. Horror & dread in the woods! Great Werewolf's!
14. The Re-Animator - Horror & black comedy at its most viscous. Gotta love this film, & all its body parts!
15. The Fearless Vampire Killers - A great horror/comedy (tribute to Hammer Studios), or is it comedy/horror? The bumbling professor & his protege are hilarious as they try to rid the world of Vampires. Featuring the first Jewish Vampire, who when confronted with a crucifix, uttered the unforgettable line, "Ysssh, you got the wrong Vampire!"
16. Dead Alive (Brain Damage, Aussie title) - Probably the goriest film ever made, & you can't take all that blood & guts seriously for a second, in this hilarious black comedy from Peter Jackson. The scene with our hero taking a baby Zombie for a stroll in the park in its baby buggy is pure genius! As is the rest of the movie! "Hyperactive!" LOL
17. Curse of the Werewolf - My favorite Werewolf film up to An American Werewolf in London! This 1961 Hammer film starring Oliver Reed as the Werewolf, is a intelligent thoughtful movie. Ahead of its time!
18. House of a Thousand Corpses - New director Rob Zombie digs deep in his horror movie memories, & produces a film of great black comedy the first half, then does something amazing, does a direct about face, & turns this film in a REAL horror ride the second half. Zombie is one to watch!
19. The Beast From Twenty Thousand Fathoms - Classic giant monster movie Sci-fi. Ray Harryhansen does great stop animation work on the Rhedosaurous who has come to raise hell in NYC! The ending is classic!
20. The Evil Dead II - Sam Rami's love of the Three Stooges shines brightly in this black, black, comedy with a sprinkling of horror. More of a remake to the more serious "Evil Dead," than a sequel. Bruce Cambell shows he has skill with physical comedy matching Jim Carrie's, really surpassing. To bad he is resigned to playing B movies.
21. Night of the Living Dead - George Romero's greatest movie. One that raised the bar for horror at the time. Filled with dread, & quite explicit in its gore of Zombies eating the living. Theres even a naked Zombie girl!
22. The Legend of Hellhouse - Not as well known as "The Haunting," but every bit as tense & foreboding. A scientist, his wife, & two mediums go to the "Mt. Everest" of haunted houses. The scientist to prove ghosts are just negative energy that can be exercised by a machine. The mediums to try & prove different. What follows is an intense ride. Great ending!
23. The Entity - This film based on a true story about a woman (Barbra Hershey) terrorized & raped by an unseen entity is horror at its best! We watch as she is pronounced mentally unfit by her shrink, until the para-normals come in. Is she insane? Don't watch this one alone in the dark.
24. Brides of Dracula - Another great Hammer horror film, but there is no Dracula here, but there is enough dread & great acting to more than suffice! My fave Hammer Vampire movie!
25. Return of the Living Dead - Just a hilarious spoof on George Romero's Zombie trilogy. Great fun!
26. Rosemary's Baby - The best Satanist film ever made in this truly disturbing mind f*ck! Mia Farrow truly goes through hell trying to figure out who to trust. Great film!
27. Dog Soldiers - Director Neil Marshall explodes on the scene with this fast & furious Werewolf film. One part "Night of the Living Dead,"one part "Evil Dead," & one part "Aliens!" Don't miss it!
28. The Deadly Mantis - Some people think this is a very corny film. Well, each to their own, but I love this movie! The special effects were well done for the fifties, & the Mantis raises hell!
29. Videodrome - For those who have a taste for the truly bizarre, David Cronenberg is your man! The only director to make a TV set creepier than all hell. Cronenberg's secret is he draws us in by hitting the bulls eyes on our repulsion responses. Its like watching a car wreck, you don't want to see, but you can't help but look. Great film about the media & how it can brain wash us.
30. Dead Ringers - Same as above, in yet another truly disturbing film about twin surgeons who make a new surgical instrument for mutant women cervix's. You'll have a creepy time trying to figure out which brother is which, in this morbid tale. Based on a true story.
